The head of the estuary has changed from what was once a busy industrial quayside to being the municipal centre of the town. Originally the estuary reached the foot of Fore Street.
In the 1950's the head of the estuary was filled in although even today a combination of heavy rain and high tides can still bring flooding to parts of the lower town.
The Salcombe lifeboat moored alongside Kingsbridge Quay.
Although the estuary is tidal, sitting alongside the water or strolling along the Promenade gives the town an entirely different character. The sawmills and timber have disappeared and today the quayside and its recently dredged basin is for pleasure craft. There have been further enhancemets to both the quayside and car park.
