The arrival of the railway in Kingsbridge in 1893 had an enormous impact on
the town. Previously the estuary has been its most important trade route in
and out of the town. It brought in new materials and goods that had previously
been manufactured locally. Today transport is still problematic, goods are brought
into the town on the congessed South Hams roads. The estuary just brings pleasure
craft.
Continuing
the long tradition of ferries linking the towns of kingsbridge and Salcombe,
during the summer a passenger ferry runs to Salcombe. This is the still the
finest way to approach both towns.
