Sherford (from 'Clear Stream') is a beautiful village in a wonderfully sheltered position surrounded by farmland. The village is surrounded by higher ground except to the south where the stream flows down to Frogmore and the estuary. There were mills within the valley and the rich red soils are fertile.

Inside the church of St. Martins there is a fifteenth century medieval painted screen showing portraits of the saints.
In the agricultural land that surrounds the village are small hamlets and isolated farms, many of which have their origins in Saxon times. Some of the surrounding manors even had their own chapels with resident monks. Stancombe, Ranscombe, Bearscombe and Malston are all nearby, with the villages of Goveton, Ledstone, Buckland Tour Saints and East Allington inland.
