| | | The
extensive shingle ridge of Slapton Sands, separates the freshwater Ley from
the salt water of Start Bay. The village of Torcross has been subjected
to many terrible storms and the modern sea-defence wall is critical to the
village's survival. Torcross is another later settlement, with its origins
in the C16th. The orignal settlement was at Widewell. Inland are the larger
villages of Slapton and Stokenham.

| Slapton
Ley, once a famous pike fishery is now a nature reserve. The beach at Slapton
Sands, the Ley and the cliffs to the north were used as a practise assault
area by Americaan troops in 1944 as preparation for the Normandy Landings.
Many soldiers lost their lives during these exercies with live firing and
there were more tragedies offshore during pre-invasion operations.
