Ley from Torcross. Although legends tell of the Irish and then vikings sailing
into the bays behind the Ley, it is most likely that the freshwater Ley
has been in existence for several thousand years. Although undoubtedly there
were landings and battles. (It was only in the sixteenth century that the
coast was deemed safe enough to build the village at Torcross.)

north along Slapton Sands towards Blackpool Sands. The ridge of shingle
along the bay is an unusual and very specific habitat. Nearby in the village
of Slapton is the Slapton Field Studies Centre, run by the Field Studies
Council. Students come to Slapton from all over the country to study this
very specific environment.
