| | Aveton
Gifford is at the head of the Avon Estuary and is the first crossing point
of the River Avon. The Avon Estuary lacks the rich mudflats and abundant
wildfowl of the Kingsbridge Estuary but it is particularly beautiful. It
is most likely that the river was a busy trading route in prehistoric times,
bringing tin down from Dartmoor for export from either Bantham or Burgh
Island. Above the village of Aveton Gifford, weirs mark the transition between
estuary and river. | | | |

| The
"stakes" tidal road across one of the upper sections of the Avon
Estuary. The road runs from Aveton Gifford towards Bigbury. Unfortunately
there are few salmon left in the river, too few to allow the traditional
salmon netting to continue but there are oyster and mussel beds in the estuary.
Inland are the small villages of Ashford, St. Annes Chapel and Loddiswell. | |
