Millbay, East Portlemouth.
Porth is a celtic name and the church at east Portlemouth is still dedicated
to Saint Winwalloe, a celtic saint. East Portlemouth was once the principal
settlement at the mouth of the estuary. It's shipyards built ships throughout
the middle ages. Unfortunately,
a ruthless land clearance in the nineteenth century by the landlord removed
the old village and its inhabitants. Apparently the villagers preferred
fishing and trading rather than working the landlords estate. The historian
Froude who lived in Salcombe raised the matter in Parliament. Such landowners
were the exception rather than the norm in the South Hams. This has always
been an area of small independant farmers rather than larger estates. |
